Supporting the Families Who Serve
At CSF Education, we work closely with military families navigating the UK education system. Every day, we see the unique challenges service life brings - frequent relocations, disrupted schooling, and, most significantly, long periods of separation from loved ones.
While school attendance policies are designed with good intentions, they often fail to reflect the realities of military life. As a result, families can face penalties simply for spending time together when a serving parent returns home.
We believe this needs to change.

When Policy Doesn’t Reflect Reality
For most families, school holidays offer predictable opportunities to reconnect and spend time together. For military families, time at home is dictated by postings, training schedules, and deployments - not term dates.
When a parent returns, it may be for a limited and unpredictable window. Under current rules, taking a child out of school during term time can lead to fines unless the absence is approved under “exceptional circumstances.”
However:
This lack of consistency places additional pressure on families already managing the demands of service life.
A More Empathetic Approach - But Not for All
Through our experience, we often see a clear contrast between sectors.
Many schools in the independent sector tend to take a more flexible and empathetic approach when working with military families. They are often more accustomed to:
As a result, these schools are frequently more willing to accommodate term-time absences where there is a genuine need.
In contrast, families in the state sector are more likely to encounter:
This creates an uneven experience for military families, depending not on their circumstances - but on the type of school their child attends.
Why Family Time Matters More Than Ever
Children in military families often experience extended periods without one or both parents. These separations can affect emotional wellbeing, stability, and sense of security.
When a parent returns, that time together is vital. It allows families to:
These moments are not easily rescheduled — and they cannot be replaced.
A Matter of Fairness
Military families already make significant sacrifices. Parents serve in demanding and often dangerous environments, missing key moments in their children’s lives.
Yet, when they return, families may face financial penalties for prioritising time together.
This raises an important issue of fairness. A system that relies on the dedication and sacrifice of armed forces personnel should also recognise and support their family lives - not restrict them.
A Call for Change
We believe there should be a clear and consistent approach across the UK.
Military families should be:
This is not about lowering expectations around education. It is about ensuring policies are applied with understanding, fairness, and compassion.
At its heart, this is about people - not policy.
It’s about recognising that for military families, time together is often rare, deeply valued, and essential to wellbeing.
We believe families should not be penalised for making the most of those moments.
It’s time to put families first - and allow military families to be together without penalty.
